All about The Cleveland Industrial Golf League!

The CIGL is an 18 hole traveling golf league,  established in 1934 by two Cleveland attorneys - Ed Knuth and Ed Russell.

The primary mission of the Cleveland Industrial Golf League (CIGL) is to promote and foster the principles of good fellowship, true sportsmanship and healthful recreation among industrial, commercial, financial and governmental organizations of the Greater Cleveland area  in the sport of golf.

Play is on Saturdays for persons (Male and Female) 18 years of age or older with team and individual competition from mid April thru mid September.

Courses played are in the Northeast Ohio region.  The range of play is from the Norwalk area (West) to the Jeromesville area (South) to the Concord area (East).

The leagues 11 teams each have a roster with at least 8 players whose handicaps can vary from -2 to 36.

On team match days, captains put out a squad of 6 players to compete head-to-head with 6 players of an opposing team.  Scoring is computed on basis of both match and stroke play.  There is also a stroke control component.  Players compete directly against their opponents and derive a score which is added to their other team members scores to determine an overall team winner.

Once a month an "Open" event is held which allows all players in the league AND their guests to play golf and enjoy each others company.  There are 5 open events during the year.

Tournaments are played throughout the year with full handicaps.  Players compete for cash prizes at the end of the year for a nominal up front fee of $6.  All monies collected for these tournaments are paid out to the contestants.  There are 2 major tournaments which are played during the open events (see schedule): 1) Matchplay Tournament - the top 32 qualify for the tournament in the main bracket.  If there are enough players to complete, a 64 player bracket will be utilized.  Players are seeded according to their qualifying scores.  Winners advance to the next round.  The finals are played at the Team Finals event at the end of the year. 2) 72-hole Tournament - players take their best 4 rounds out of the up to 5 rounds played in the open events to makeup their 72-hole score for the tournament.  Payouts are made to top gross and net scores and are broken down into the 4 player classes (AA,A,B,C).

The CIGL is always looking to add additional teams and/or players. Team fees are $200 per season, plus $50 per player.

The CIGL follows the USGA rules of golf (USGA Rules) with few exceptions.  To see our Constitution and By-laws, click here.
